focus on Shaw’s hot bat in AAA and perhaps hope

Despite the recent spat of winning that has gotten into the San Francisco Giants dugout, the team still isn’t playing for much more than pride at this point. The management wants to see which players they can keep around on the roster next season and the players want to prove that they are worth keeping around. So far this season, the Giants have brought up several farm hands and many more will likely be given tryouts through September, when the team’s MLB roster will expand to 40 total spots. Despite an injury to someone who might otherwise be on this list, Austin Slater; If you’re a Giants fan looking for meaning in this season the look into the team’s future is it, and here are five prospects who you should look to for silver linings on this season’s cloud.

1B/OF Chris Shaw

After being the only Giants prospect to make it in Baseball America’s Midseason Top 100 Prospects list 86 , Shaw is currently the most prized player in the system. It’s still unclear how his lefty bat will play at AT T and if he can play a passable enough outfield to start there, or if he’s just a 1B that will warrant a move by Brandon Belt to the outfield and keeping Buster Posey behind the plate for a significant portion of the next several years. At some point, there may be a log jam that needs sorting out. For now, Giants fans can Matt Cain Jersey focus on Shaw’s hot bat in AAA and perhaps hope for a September appearance from the 23 year old.

3B Christian Arroyo

Christian Arroyo is a player who’s seen time in the Majors but now finds himself on the DL. He’s been a part of the Giants plans since they drafted him 25th overall in the 2013 Rule 4 Draft. His profile as a 3B with right handed power matches pretty perfectly with what the team will need going into next season, and the Giants would have likely promoted Arroyo soon again perhaps as soon as any potential Eduardo Nunez trade had he stayed healthy. Regardless, Arroyo at minimum will be a candidate next Spring Training to make the roster in some significant capacity, and it will be interesting to see if the Giants ultimately decide to end his season because of his injury or bring him up as a September call up.
Once the gem of the farm system, Crick is now hoping to stick with the big league team as a reliever and is doing a solid job so far in San Francisco. Armed with a big mid 90’s fastball and a tight slider, Crick’s well known wildness hasn’t manifested in the majors in a limited sample. The Giants would probably love to have the ability to plug Crick into Hunter Strickland‘s place in the bullpen and dangle Strickland for possible prospects. Keep in mind that despite being in the system since 2011, Crick is still just 24 and still has room to improve, which Pitching Coach Dave Righetti is certainly aware of. Crick can certainly become a viable high upside piece of bullpen depth for Bochy and the crew in upcoming seasons.

INF Ryder Jones

Ryder Jones will probably never be a full time starter on the Giants, but he’s got some pop in his bat, position flexibility, and was having a big year at AAA before coming to the majors and ultimately, yes, landing on the DL. He represents a somewhat more powerful version of a player like Kelby Tomlinson and likely has a higher ceiling than a player like Conor Gillaspie, which may give Bruce Bochy something to consider when deciding next season’s bench. For right now, Jones has to focus on getting healthy and doing the most with his tryout opportunities as he can.

3B Jae Gyun Hwang

The 29 year old Korean qualifies as a rookie on service time only as he was a pro for several seasons across the Pacific. The Giants were in some sense pressured to promote him to the show because of a looming opt out cause he had in his contract. With position players becoming injured and/or ineffective, calling up Hwang in advance of the opt out was a no brainer; however, despite a decent start Hwang’s stats have tumbled .587 OPS with just 1 HR . Hwang can still adjust and reverse his fortunes so far this season, so as to entice the Giants to keep him around for next season when he could be come a powerful infielder option off the bench.
